Enjoy the ultimate convenience of continuous lens wear for up to 30 nights and days.

Imagine putting in your contact lenses and leaving them in continuously for up to an entire month. That's what new Focus NIGHT & DAY soft contact lenses allow you to do. You'll see clearly all the time, day or night, even upon waking! And, when worn for 30 nights, there's no need for the hassle of daily cleaning and disinfecting-you'll only have to handle your contact lenses once a month. New NIGHT & DAY lenses are simply the ultimate in convenience.

Breathe easy. Focus NIGHT & DAY lenses are designed to be slept in.

Did your doctor ever warn you about sleeping in your lenses? It's because a lack of oxygen to the eyes can cause problems when wearing ordinary extended wear lenses overnight. To sleep safely in soft contact lenses, you need an extraordinary lens that given the eye all the oxygen it needs to stay healthy. With a breakthrough lens material, new NIGHT & DAY lenses allow up to 6 times more oxygen through to your eyes than ordinary soft contact lenses. Your eyes will be able to breathe as well as if you weren't wearing lenses at all-even while asleep.

An exciting new option for bifocal wearers

Johnson & Johnson Vision products, Inc. has an exciting new way to correct presbyopia and recreate the feeling and freedom of natural vision you once enjoyed.

What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia (prez-bee-OH-pee-uh) is a common eye condition found mostly in people over the age of 40. It is caused by the weakness of the muscles that control the shape of the eye’s lens. This results in the gradual loss of the eye’s ability to change focus from distant to near objects. Presbyopia is commonly associated with aging of the human eye and is perfectly normal. In fact, people who don’t experience presbyopia later in life are in the minority.

What are the vision correction options for presbyopic patients?
In the past, presbyopic patients had to rely on reading, bifocal, trifocal and progressive addition eyeglasses.

Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the term used for the loss of reading and near vision directly related to aging. With increasing age, the ability of the eyes to focus up close, known as accommodation, decreases to the point where we all need spectacle correction for reading over the age of 40-45. For over 150 years, this progressive decrease in accommodation with aging was thought to be the result of the natural lens hardening. This theory was developed by the German scientist Helmholtz in 1855 and was accepted as truth until 1994. Ronald Schachar, MD, Ph.D. has described new theories for accommodation and presbyopia that are more scientifically and medically accurate. He has proven that the main reason for the loss of near vision with accommodation is the increased size of the human lens. The human lens continues to grow concentrically throughout life, similar to the way and onion grows. This growth, in time begins to crowd the space between the human lens and the ciliary muscle which controls accommodation. The result is a progressive reduction in the effective function of the muscle thus leading to a continuous decrease of accommodation.

Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia (SRP)

Based on his theories of accommodation and presbyopia, Dr. Schachar has developed a surgical procedure to restore the function of the aging human lens. This revolutionary new procedure is called Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia (SRP). SRP is performed by inserting 4 small implants into the sclera -- the white of the eye. These implants are called Scleral Expansion Bands (SEB). They are not felt by the patient and not visible without magnification. The SEB's expand the sclera overlying the ciliary muscle. By doing so, the distance between the ciliary muscle and the lens equator is increased. This enhances the effect of the ciliary muscle contraction and restores the ability to read and see ant near distances.

Investigational Status of Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia

Recently, the Health Protection Branch of Canada granted approval to begin clinical trials for the Surgical Reversal of Presbyopia using Dr. Schachar's SEBs. On August 15, 1998, the first patients in Canada were treated by Dr. Sheldon Herzig and Dr. John MacLeod at the Herzig Eye Institute. It is important to note that investigational does not mean experimental.

The Consultation

The first step is to determine whether you are a good candidate for SRP through a comprehensive assessment by Drs. Rajani or Cobean, staff doctors at the Herzig Eye Institute. The ideal patient is 45 - 65 years old, generally healthy with no significant ocular disease. All aspects of the procedure will be carefully explained. You can rest assured that you will be given a professional and realistic opinion of the results you can expect.
